AI through CAP

Sign in with your CAP account to discuss a reading. Primer uses CAP’s shared AI proxy; there is no separate OpenRouter connection or API-key setup inside Primer.

Each person receives $5 in free allowance per UTC calendar month. Unused free allowance does not roll over. Admin credits persist until used. These balances are shared across CAP apps. Requests also depend on the cumulative sponsor budget: a positive personal balance does not guarantee that funding is available.

Open Settings to see the recorded monthly and admin credit, pending reservations, unresolved debt, and any monthly allowance not yet issued. Reading a balance does not issue credit. The CAP account is the authoritative place to check allowance and usage; Primer’s Usage page preserves reported costs for this app, including historical user-funded requests.

A reply can make several model calls to look up passages or earlier conversations. Each step, automatic conversation title and context draft uses the same CAP accounting boundary. Switching models can change how quickly your allowance is used. Primer never silently switches to a personal provider key when funding is exhausted.

If funding is exhausted or paused, keep reading, edit notes, import readings and reopen saved conversations. A pending charge can temporarily block another request. If a reply stops or a connection fails, any partial response is saved when storage remains available. Check the saved conversation and CAP usage before sending a new request. Retrying with a new question is a new request; lost responses are not automatically resent.

What is stored and sent

Primer stores your readings, notes, conversations and generation history. When you ask a question, relevant reading text, your optional account/book context and selected conversation history pass through CAP’s AI proxy to the model provider. Local read-only tools can supply passages or your earlier conversations about the same reading. Private storage does not mean this text stays on your device.

A context draft sends supplied book metadata and opening text, and remains a proposal until you save it. The model can be wrong; passages remain the source for quotations.

Legacy encrypted provider connection records remain stored for deliberate retirement. They are not used for CAP-funded requests. This migration does not revoke a provider key or delete its history. Any future bring-your-own-provider option belongs centrally in CAP.

When reading connection checks are available for your account, they use CAP AI to connect visible passages to your saved questions and threads. Treat these suggestions as prompts for your own reading. If checks are unavailable, your saved questions, threads and prior results remain available.
